Her legacy is not just inked in stories but etched in the hearts of everyone she touched. Let’s unwrap the tapestry of her life together!

Early Life and Family

Imagine growing up as the eldest in a bustling family of six kids in Bellevue, Ohio. That’s where our story begins. Mary was born to Isidore and Mary Shank on November 6, 1961, and right from the start, she was a beacon of enthusiasm and responsibility among her siblings.

Completing high school at Tiffin Calvert Catholic High School in 1980 was just the beginning of her educational adventures. In 1985, Mary took a giant leap into the world by marrying Norman Smith, her partner in crime for 33 incredible years. The journey led them to the sunny suburbs of Plano, Texas, in 1989, where they laid down their family roots.

Mary’s family blossomed in Texas, with children Megan, Mary Magdalene, and Kathleen bringing immeasurable joy. Adding to this tree of life were grandchildren David, Clare, and John Kuo, along with Anna, Andrew, and Philip Brown. Though she faced the heartbreak of losing daughters Rebecca Leigh and Bernadette Gertrude, her boundless love continued to nurture those around her.

Educational Pursuits and Career

Here’s the thing: Mary’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable. After years dedicated to family and community, she decided to hit the books again! Returning to college is no small feat, but Mary nailed it by graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Elementary Education from the University of North Texas in 2007. Talk about crushing it!

Mary didn’t just stop at being an ace student; she took her love for learning into her professional life. As a substitute teacher, she filled classrooms with passion, touching countless young lives with her wisdom and warmth. But her enterprising spirit didn’t stop there. Mary embraced her small business ambitions, channeling her creativity and entrepreneurship into a venture we could all envy.

Her commitment to causes she believed in never wavered. As the Christie Elementary PTO president, she championed educational initiatives with vigor. And her dedication to pro-life advocacy with CPLC Youth for Life programs was nothing short of inspiring. It was all about creating a legacy of positive change, and boy, did she succeed!

Hobbies and Personal Interests

Mary wasn’t all work and no play far from it! Her fandom for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Navy football was as vibrant as a stadium cheer. She also cheered for the Texas A&M Aggies with kinship and pride.

And if you thought sports were her only interest, think again! Crafting was the melody of her passions she could crochet, sew, paint, and even work magic with vinyl designs. Family celebrations were her canvas, painting birthdays, Thanksgivings, and Christmas with unforgettable traditions and warmth.

Let’s say Mary knew how to make every holiday sparkle with love and laughter. You could count on her to know how to make heartfelt moments memorable whether it was through her unrivaled cooking during Thanksgiving or unofficial pastime of touch football on chilled fall evenings.
